Every diocese in The Episcopal Church gathers every year in convention, the primary governing and legislative body of the diocese. Each faith community participates by sending a delegation of laity and clergy, when present.
At diocesan convention, we pass resolutions and elect leaders to various governing bodies, we consider any proposed changes to the constitution and canons, and take part in the financial stewardship of the diocese. It’s also an opportunity to gather in fellowship, learning, and worship as a diocesan body.
In 2024, we will gather twice. On Saturday, March 16th, the Dioceses of Eastern and Western Michigan will gather for a Special Joint Convention to consider action on our proposed diocesan juncture (the canonical term for merger of dioceses). Then, it’s anticipated we will gather for our next annual convention, which may be the First Convention of the new diocese, on October 18-19 in Mount Pleasant.

BUILDING BRIDGES REPORT & MATERIALS FOR SHARING
Our convention attendees received an extended presentation from the Building Bridges Steering Committee, briefing the delegates on their work thus far of listening, researching, considering, and reflecting back what they’ve heard. They also detailed the next few crucial months of our bi-diocesan discernment in preparation for our special convention in March, including the need for delegates and clergy to take the information back to their congregations to help inform and encourage participation.
